Health Ministry inspects beauty parlours

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority (CDDRA) identified fifteen places that retailed low quality cosmetics and cosmetic devices.

The spokesman for the Health Ministry said Wednesday that 812 centres which retailed cosmetics and cosmetic devices had been inspected by the end of last month.

However, the CDDRA only issued them a warning as this was the first time that such a programme was being carried out.

The spokesman said 1,654 cosmetics and beauty treatment centres had been inspected during the phase one period initiated countrywide at the beginning of November.

The spokesman said the programme was initiated to identify cosmetics and devices used in beauty parlours and verify as to whether they had been registered with the CDDRA. This was done to identify the hygienic conditions and quality that should be maintained by beauty parlours and also to create awareness. It also gave an opportunity to recognise the qualifications and experience of beauticians and their helpers.

There were many more places – beauty parlours and cosmetic retail outlets – to be inspected in the country. He added that the CDDRA would commence the second phase of the programme in the near future.
